Официально первой в мире цифровой фотокамерой считается разработка фирмы Kodak, а точнее Стивена Сессона. Она была создана в декабре 1975 года. Камера была размером с тостер и записывала чёрно-белые изображения размером 100х100 пикселей, то есть 0,01 мегапиксель, по сегодняшним меркам. А весил такой «тостер» 3,5 кг.
По сути, это было устройство, которое могло записывать неподвижные объекты на аудиокассету или видеокассету с магнитной лентой. Время записи изображения с момента нажатия кнопки затвора составляло 23 секунды. А чтобы увидеть фотографию, кассету нужно было переставить в специальный магнитофон, подключенный к микрокомпьютеру, а сам микрокомпьютер подключался к телевизору, на который и выводилась фотография.
